How to polish quartz countertops: 4 ways to keep them shiny

Quartz worktops are a stunning addition to any home. However, your quartz countertop might lose its shine and lustre with regular use.

If your quartz work surface doesn’t look as good as it did when it was first installed, we’ve got four top tips to help you get it looking like new!

When do you need to polish quartz countertops?

First, it’s important to understand when and why you might need to polish your quartz countertops.

Quartz is often called an ‘engineered stone’, meaning it was made in a factory rather than mined directly from a stone quarry. During manufacturing, quartz slabs are permanently polished so that the finish will not wear off over time (unless you damage it). This means your quartz countertop shouldn’t need to be physically polished or resurfaced during its lifetime – provided you look after it.

However, this doesn’t mean that your quartz worktop will stay shiny without you taking some steps to maintain it. Below, we’ll go over the best ways to keep clean quartz countertops beautifully and shiny.

1. Soap and warm water

The easiest way to restore your quartz countertops’ shine is to use warm, soapy water. Simply wet your quartz work surface and then use your choice of soft sponge or washcloth to clean it thoroughly. You should then rinse the surface to remove any residual soap, which can create a hazy layer over your quartz countertop.

To ensure a polished appearance, thoroughly dry the surface using a clean, dry cloth or a squeegee. After the polishing process, check that there are no remaining streaks, as these can look unsightly and damage the quartz worktop over time.

2. Window cleaners

Strangely, window cleaner is a great way to bring back quartz’s natural lustre and shine. Although it’s designed to keep your windows shiny and streak-free, it does the same to quartz!

Use a small amount of window cleaner for the best results. You can use a spray bottle filled with water and a small amount of window cleaner, which will help to cover the entire surface. Once you’re satisfied the whole surface is covered, use a clean cloth to dry and polish your quartz countertop using circular motions. Soon enough, your quartz will be returned to its former glory.

3. Quartz worktop polish

There are many specially formulated quartz polishing products available, such as quartz polishing cream. It’s always best to use a quartz-specific product rather than a general household cleaner to avoid damaging your worktops.

Follow the instructions on the product to polish your quartz countertops. Just make sure that they’re thoroughly clean before using any polishing products to ensure the best possible results.

4. Vinegar and water mixture

You can also use a simple mixture of vinegar and water to bring back your quartz’s shine. Mix 1 part vinegar and 3 parts water in a spray bottle, then ensure the whole surface is covered in the solution. Once covered, use a clean and dry microfiber cloth to polish your quartz countertop until the shine is restored.

What not to use on quartz countertops

Although quartz worktops are incredibly tough and durable, some cleaning and polishing products can still damage your quartz surface. Regular use of these products can lead to etching, staining or discolouration.

You should avoid using these cleaning products on your quartz countertops:

  • Abrasive scrubbers
  • Undiluted vinegar or lemon juice
  • Baking soda
  • Bleach
  • Strong chemicals, such as hydrochloric acid
