Why choose natural stone?

Appearance

Natural stone is prized for its individuality, with every slab featuring unique colours, veining, textures, and movement shaped by nature over millions of years. No two pieces are ever identical, giving each project a distinctive and authentic finish. From the elegant veining of marble and the crystalline depth of quartzite to the warm, organic character of travertine, natural stone offers a level of visual interest that cannot be replicated. These natural variations are not imperfections but part of what makes every installation unique.

Scratch & Impact Resistant

Natural stone is designed to withstand the demands of everyday living while retaining its beauty and character. Quartzite is one of the hardest natural stones available, offering exceptional resistance to scratches, chips, and impacts, making it ideal for busy spaces. Marble and travertine provide excellent durability for residential applications, although their softer composition means they benefit from sensible day-to-day care. With the right maintenance, all three materials can provide decades of reliable performance.

Water & Stain Resistance

Natural stone can provide excellent resistance to moisture and everyday spills when properly sealed. As a natural material, the level of porosity varies between stones, with marble and travertine generally benefiting from more regular sealing, while quartzite is naturally denser. Routine sealing helps reduce water absorption, improve stain resistance, and preserve the appearance of the surface. With appropriate care, natural stone remains a practical and beautiful choice for kitchens, bathrooms, and living spaces.

Heat & Fire Resistance

Formed under extreme heat and pressure within the earth, natural stone is inherently resistant to high temperatures. Marble, quartzite, and travertine all perform exceptionally well in environments exposed to heat, making them popular choices for kitchen worktops, fireplaces, and outdoor living areas. While protective measures such as trivets are always recommended, natural stone offers a level of heat resistance that provides confidence in everyday use.

UV Ray Resistance

Unlike many manufactured materials, natural stone offers excellent colour stability when exposed to sunlight. Marble, quartzite, and travertine naturally resist UV rays, helping them maintain their appearance in both indoor and outdoor settings. This makes them particularly well suited to spaces with large amounts of natural light, as well as exterior applications such as outdoor kitchens, patios, and landscaping features.

Do natural stone worktops need sealing?

Most do, yes. Because natural stone is quarried rather than manufactured, it’s more porous than engineered surfaces, so we seal it on installation and recommend resealing periodically to guard against staining. Day to day it’s simple to look after, wipe with warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner, and avoid harsh or acidic products. With a little care, a natural stone worktop keeps its character and finish for years.

What’s the difference between natural stone and engineered stone?

Natural stone is quarried directly from the earth, so no two slabs are ever exactly alike, that individuality is the appeal. Engineered surfaces are manufactured for greater consistency in pattern, colour and performance, and tend to be lower-maintenance. Both offer beautiful results: natural stone suits anyone who values authentic, organic variation, while engineered stone is ideal if you prefer a uniform look and easier upkeep.

Is natural stone covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every Terra natural stone surface is backed by our 15-year material warranty and a 5-year craftsmanship guarantee, covering both the slab we supply and the quality of our installation, so your worktop stays a beautiful feature of your home for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quartzite is an extremely hard, heat-resistant natural stone, highly durable and ideal for busy kitchens. Marble offers softer, more luxurious veining and timeless elegance, but is more porous and needs a little more care. Both are 100% natural, so no two slabs are ever identical.

Your worktop arrives already sealed. To keep it protected against stains and moisture, we recommend regular maintenance and periodic re-sealing, we’ll advise on the right routine for your chosen stone.

Quartzite is highly heat-resistant. With marble we recommend using trivets and wiping spills promptly, especially anything acidic like lemon or wine, to avoid etching.

Quartzite is very hard and, once sealed, highly scratch- and stain-resistant. Marble is softer and more prone to marking, which is why sealing and prompt cleaning matter. Each slab is unique to your kitchen.
