Transforming a Loft into the Heart of the Home

A loft reimagined around Taj Mahal stone

For Olga Orr, the ambition was simple: create a larger, brighter kitchen that better suited the way her family lived. Rather than extending outward, she looked upward, transforming an underused loft space into a new living area that would become the focal point of the home.

A key part of that vision was the introduction of ELORĀ's Taj Mahal. Chosen for its warm tones and understated elegance, the material provided the perfect foundation for a space filled with natural light and soft, balanced colours. From the outset, the project required careful planning. Working within the unique angles and proportions of the loft meant every element needed to be considered in relation to the architecture of the room. The challenge was not simply installing stone surfaces, but integrating them into a space where every line and junction mattered.

At the centre of the kitchen sits a substantial island wrapped in the Taj Mahal engineered stone. Fabricated and installed by the Mo's StoneX team, it provides both visual impact and everyday practicality. One of its most distinctive features is the integrated open storage niche beneath the worktop, which is fully lined in the same material. This detail allows the stone to continue through the structure of the island itself, creating a seamless and carefully considered finish.

The use of the stone extends beyond the main work surfaces. On the opposite side of the room, the stone appears again as a dedicated display shelf, creating another subtle moment of continuity within the design. Though small in scale, details like this play an important role in tying the space together and reinforcing the overall design language. The result is a kitchen that feels open, welcoming, and perfectly suited to its loft setting.

Projects like this demonstrate that successful stonework is about more than fabrication alone. It is about understanding the different ways in which they can be integrated into the main architecture and the way a space is used. Every detail, from the island to the display shelf, was carefully fabricated and installed to ensure the final result felt cohesive and complete.

For Olga Orr, the transformation is about far more than adding a new kitchen. It is about unlocking the potential of an overlooked part of the home and turning it into the space where family life now revolves. Through thoughtful design, carefully selected materials, and expert execution, the loft has become exactly that.
